Turn in Old or Unused Prescriptions
Saturday, June 6th, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

When is the last time you cleaned out your medicine cabinet?

Chances are you have some old prescription drugs around that you probably need to get rid of, but how?

Increasing amounts of prescription drugs are detected in U.S. waterways and groundwater. Flushing old drugs or putting them in the trash are not good choices. On June 6th, the Virginia Beach police will be collecting old or unused prescriptions at all four Virginia Beach Police precincts.

Wanted: Plastics For

Reuse, Recycle, Renew

Dear Community,

We have created a sculptural art project inspired by the different qualities of glass for the students that will be touring CAC during Art of Glass 2. To reduce our need to purchase supplies, we could use your help in gathering materials.

Please save/share the following items for the upcoming SAS projects. This list is intended to give you ideas.  We can use anything that looks like glass (clear or opaque) that is "kid safe."   Please be sure the recycled food items are clean.  The items can be left in the First Art classroom or in Holly Ackiss’s office!

Recycled items:
clear take out containers
clear egg cartons
plastic store bags (if clear/opaque)
bottles (clean please)
many single serving foods or baby foods come in small plastic  containers (rinsed out)
blister packaging from many items (fun shapes and forms)
clear plastic Easter eggs or cellophane Easter grass

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

LRNOW Announces 2008 - 2009 Pearl School Award Winners:

Lynnhaven River NOW is proud to announce the 2008 - 2009 Pearl School Award winners. This award is presented to schools that offer exceptional environmental education programs and projects to their students. The teachers in the public and private schools in our watershed are some of the most effective spokespeople out there for water stewardship.

The goal of the Pearl School Award Program is to encourage and support the efforts of these teachers and schools. Through the Pearl School Program, schools will be able to earn points by carrying out educational and service programs in their schools that teach environmental concepts, including an understanding of our watershed---its unique characteristics and its problems, and by encouraging students to take an active role in tackling some of our environmental challenges through service projects in their schools and in the community.

This year Lynnhaven River Now is excited to announce that this award is being presented to an unprecedented 23 schools in the City of Virginia Beach. Those schools include:
Alanton Elementary, Bayside Elementary, Cape Henry Collegiate, Christopher Farms Elementary, W.T. Cooke Elementary, Cox High, Creeds Elementary, John B. Dey Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, Great Neck Middle, Kemps Landing Magnet, King's Grant Elementary, Lynnhaven Middle, New Castle Elementary, Pembroke Elementary, Plaza Middle, Princess Anne Middle, Red Mill Elementary, Thalia Elementary, Three Oaks Elementary and Virginia Beach Friends.

Congratulations and thank you for the great work!

Dockside Inn is at 3311Shore Drive, just east of the Lesner Bridge.

From Lynnhaven River Now:

Good Decision On The Asian Oyster Question

We are happy to spread the good news of the decision by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland and Virginia to follow the science, reject the introduction of the Asian oyster to our waters, and focus commercial and ecological restoration efforts on the native oyster.  Native Oyster Restoration successes in the Lynnhaven and the Great Wicomico Rivers were important in demonstrating the potential for native oyster restoration and influenced this final decision.  After five years of study, we are excited about a unified effort to restore our native oysters.  To read the article in the today?s Virginian Pilot follow this link: http://hamptonroads.com/2009/04/asian-oysters-not-part-plan-revive-stocks-bay

Dominion Virginia now offers 'green energy' option

Posted February 9, 2009
By Philip Walzer
The Virginian-Pilot

Dominion Virginia Power on Monday outlined details of its "Green Power" initiative that allows customers to get their energy from renewable sources at a slightly higher price.

The program, which takes effect immediately, is voluntary and open to both businesses and individuals.

Dominion customers can choose from two options.

In one, the region's major electricity provider allows customers to pay for all of their electricity through "renewable energy certificates."

The additional cost is equivalent to 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. So for a consumer who uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month, the additional fee would be $15 a month.

In the other, customers can buy "blocks" of renewable energy. Each block provides 133 kilowatt-hours and costs an additional $2 a month.

"We heard from our customers that they wanted this choice, and we are happy to provide it," said David Botkins, a spokesman for Dominion. "It's good for our customers, it's good for Virginia, and it provides a menu of choices."

Dominion will use a variety of renewable sources of energy both inside and outside Virginia, including wind, solar and hydroelectric, Botkins said. The company will neither lose nor make money from the program, he said.

Dominion officials have said they hoped that 12 percent of the energy they provide would come from renewable sources by 2022.

News From Chesapeake Bay Foundation

After 25 years of watching promises broken and commitments unfulfilled, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) filed a lawsuit in federal court to require the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to enforce the law and reduce pollution sufficiently to remove the Chesapeake Bay from the federal ‘impaired waters’ list. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia following a legal requirement for a 60-day notice of intent to sue period (CBF filed the notice on Oct. 29).
